Water reed grows naturally in coastal areas, estuaries and inland lakes and has long been used as a thatching material. Restricted amounts are harvested in Norfolk, Suffolk, Scotland, Wales and the South Coast of England, but for the most part, water reed is imported to the UK from Europe and, more recently, China.
